Favorite
Cars From My Youth
My
earliest memories are of cars - riding in them, looking at them,
playing with them. The following are some of my favorites from
when I was growing up:
1970 1/2 - 1973
Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport
My sister's friend Cindy Landers was given a '70 1/2 Camaro Rally
Sport as her first car by her father. He taught her how to drive
FAST! To this day, I think that the Rally Sport's split bumper
front end with the blinkers beside the headlights car is one
of the most beautiful ever designed.
1978 Chevrolet
Camaro Z28
My
friend Lynne Booth got a 1978 Z28 when we were in high
school. I worshipped that car. To this day, I think
that the 1978 is the best looking of the late second generation Camaros.
1967 Mercury Park Lane
My parents had a 1967 Mercury Park
Lane. It was Glacier Blue with a Navy Blue vinyl top, had a 410
with a 4-bbl and dual-exhaust and I thought it was the most beautiful
car ever. At age 6, I ran away from home (to the creek behind our
house) when they were getting ready to go
trade it in on a 1969 Country Squire (see below) because the Park Lane
was too small. My ploy was unsuccessful, but I knew I would own
one
of those cars someday. Thirty five years later, I found
this one in
Carpenter, CA. I still think the lines are amazing for such a big
car.
1967 - 1968 Mercury Cougar
Before my parents bought the Park Lane,
they brought home a Cougar to see if it was a possibility for our
family but determined it was much too small, so they bought the Park
Lane. A few years later, we moved to Mississippi and my mother's
best friend had a 68 Cougar and I loved it, too. So, now I own
this one, too.
1969 Ford Country Squire
Although I did
not want my parents to get rid of the Park Lane, I eventually fell in
love with the Country Squire, as well. The hidden headlight front
end seemed sporty to me. It was fast, too, with Ford's powerful
429. One of these sold on EBay this week for over
$15,000!!
1967 and 1968 Pontiac Firebird
In Mississippi, one of my friends'
father owned a '67 Firebird convertible. It stayed in the garage
most of the time while he drove their 1971 Toyota Corolla back and
forth to work
everyday. Even so, whenever I was over at their house I would go
in through the garage so I could touch the Firebird and run my hand
along it's curves. I still wonder whatever happened to that car
after
they moved. The car pictured is a 1967.
1973 - 1975 Pontiac Grand Am
Another family in our neighborhood in
Mississippi had a 74 Pontiac Grand Am (very little changed from the '73
model) and I thought it was so tough that I did not even miss the
GTO. I was fascinated that it had a 6.5 litre engine emblem on
the trunk (I only knew about cubic inches at that point). A
friend's brother had one when we were in junior high and I would see it
in the parking lot at the high school. I once dreamed that my
mother had bought his car for me, but when I woke up my Bobcat was
still in the driveway. I am still dreaming, I guess.
