Cars have played a big role in my life.  My mother gave me my first Matchbox car at the age of two, and quickly regretted it.  By the time I was five, I could (and did) name almost any car I saw as we drove down the street and tell you the manufacturer and year.  In fact, I generally mark time by what car my family or I owned during that period.

Below is my daily driver, a 1998 Subrau Outback!

1998 Subaru Outback

When Subaru introduced the Outback in 1995, I fell in love with it.  It was a wagon, but sporty and rugged enough to appear butch.  How butch?  Do you know how many lesbians bought Outbacks until Subaru introduced the Forester?  Even my sister's ex-girlfriend owns one.  (Of course, she's not really butch, but...)  Add to that, Subaru is an extremely GLBT friendly company - I almost HAD to buy one.  For the first time in my life, I was not always looking for a way out of my current car and into my next.  I have owned the GFT (Griswold Family Truckster) for over seven years and have no immediate plans for a new car.  So after 15 cars in over twenty years of driving, I've finally found a keeper.

1967 Mercury Park Lane

My parents bought a new Mercury Park Lane in 1967 (yes, I was 4), and I thought it was the most beautiful car in the world.  It was light blue with a Navy Blue Vinyl top.  In 1969, they decided we needed to go back to a station wagon and were going to trade it in on a Ford Country Squire.  Using my 6-year-old logic, I ran away from home - thinking that they'd be so busy looking for me that someone else would buy the car abd we'd have to keep the Mercury.  Not only did they find me immediately, but they made me go with them to trade-in MY car.  I always said I would find one, and here it is.  I found the car in Hemmings Motor News; it was located outside Sacramento,CA.  This car is one of only  2,196 2-door hardtop coupes produced that year.

What can I say?  I missed my old Cougar.

1994 Ford Taurus SHO

In order to get collector car insurance, Hal and I needed to have at least one car each that was younger than 20 years old.  Rather than spend $25K to $30K, I got "The Mighty SHO" for $1200 on EBay.  I put a little money into it and it is now quite a reliable second car.  I believe it will be a classic one day.

Who knows what I'll be driving the next time I show up in your rear view mirror...
